How to Get work experience
How to Get work experience by Amber Rolfe Need to get experience without any experience? Getting some hands-on experience in the working world can be the best way to decide on your dream career (not to mention become practiced enough to actually pursue it). But finding a suitable placement isnât always easy.Weâve already covered what you need to know about work experience, but to help guide you further, here are four top tips to ensure your work experience hunt brings the best results: Decide what you really want to doDeciding on the right role for you can be tough â" but having a sense of direction is crucial if youâre looking to make the most out of your placement. If youâre stuck on what to choose, consider your hobbies and current skillset, and list the potential careers that could allow you to indulge them on a daily basis. If youâre at University or have just graduated, your career goals could be clearer. In this case, use what youâve learnt from your degree to ascertain the best care er path for you.By no means feel like youâre limited to work experience solely based on your area of study. But having a clear idea on where you want to end up in your career will definitely help you decide where to start.Make sure your CV is up to the jobRegardless of whether the position is temporary or full-time, you still need to sell yourself.Competition can be strong (especially for summer placements), and the last thing you want is to miss out on your dream work experience location just because your CV didnât really stand out.Instead, make sure your application places precedence on your hard-working nature, enthusiasm, and ability to learn on-the-job â" and refer to concrete examples (wherever possible) to back yourself up.Resist the temptation to âpad it outâ to overcompensate for a lack of direct experience at this point. Whether youâre still at school, or youâre looking for a pre or post-uni placement, employers hiring for these kinds of roles arenât going t o expect candidates with a full two pages worth of experience.Lead with your transferrable skills and interest in the field, and youâre much more likely to impress your prospective employer. Cover all the basesFiguring out how to get work experience isnât always as straightforward as doing a job search â" mainly because vacancies arenât always advertised in the same way.Firstly, ask your friends and family if they know of any relevant placements going in your local area. You could also try asking your tutor (if youâre still at school) to see if they have any connections which might help you get started. If youâre at University, consider getting in touch with your University careers service, who should be able to recommend suitable companies using their own database of contacts.Searching online for your dream work placement can still be a great way to find the experience you really want, but donât be discouraged if there arenât any work experience vacancies advertised. You could always take a speculative approach â" getting in touch and explaining the skills you could offer an organisation could work in your favour.Remember: If you donât ask, youâll never know. Dig for more informationWhether youâre a school student in the process of asking around for work experience, or youâre at the interview stage for a work placement opportunity, asking questions about what the role will entail is a perfect way to show your interest and figure out what youâll actually be doing if you got it.After all, it could be that some placements arenât exactly what you expect, and finding out more about each one will help to decide on which is the most suitable.Things you should ask could include: âwhat kind of tasks will I be doingâ, âwill my expenses be paid?â, âhow much training will there be?â, and âis there an opportunity to progress to a full-time (or part-time) position?âRemember: not all opportunities will be the right fit for you. I f you take on the first work experience placement you find without asking about it, you could just end up wasting your time â" and the employerâs.Find a job What Where Search JobsSign up for more Career AdviceSign up for moreCareer Advice Please enter a valid email addressmessage hereBy clicking Submit you agree to the

An Apprentice-Ship HUB related crowd funding campaign launched
An Apprentice-Ship HUB related crowd funding campaign launched Samuel-James Wilson who, for the last four years, has been documenting his work and travel on The Apprentice-Ship site has now started a crowd funding campaign to develop his idea of The Apprentice-Ship HUB. @Career_Geek I have created a crowdfunding campaign. To develop a website for apprentices. Please take a look http://t.co/aZgTF5OXes â" Samuel-James Wilson (@Samuelship) April 30, 2014 Samuel started blogging in 2010 on The Apprentice-Ship blog On his crowd funding page he says Over the past couple of years the numbers of new apprenticeships have been on the rise due to world government FINALLY taking an interest. However, the percentage of these apprenticeships being completed is falling. And Samuel believes this is due to lack of knowledge on both sides. The employers may not understand their full responsibilities and the apprentices may not fully understand theirs. And to change this, the apprenticeship related crowd funding campaign has been launched. As Samuel explains, The money raised through this campaign will go towards the designing and developing a website that will bring both employer and employee together. The new website will allow aspiring apprentices from around the world to communicate with one another and a place where they can hopefully find their future path in life. A place where people young and old can share advice and guidance, a place where companies can list their vacancies and read about aspiring apprentices. I have found a designer and developer and were ready to get to work so please, even if its just £1 help me, help them. To help Samuel and support this campaign, visit his crowd funding page. Five Ways to Get Out of Debt Fast
Five Ways to Get Out of Debt Fast If youâre in debt, youâre not alone. 80% of Americans are in debt, and the average Canadian has a consumer debt of $8,500. Getting out of debt can feel like an impossible nightmare. You donât want to live with your debt forever, though, so finding a way to break free is important. While it might seem impossible, getting out of debt might be easier than you think. Without further ado, here are five ways to get out of debt fast. Budget If you donât already budget, you should start. Itâs hard to live within your means if youâre not watching the numbers. You can track your income and your spending, and make sure youâre putting enough aside for bills. After you analyze your financial situation, you may realize you need to make some life changes in order to live within your budget, and start putting money aside for your debts. Downsize If you got a little too caught up in consumerism, you might own a lot of stuff you donât need. You may also be living in a bigger home or apartment than you need to be. Downsizing is one of the best steps you can take towards getting out of debt. Say goodbye to your stuff and start living simply. Youâll be amazed at how much you can save if you simplify your lifestyle. Spend Less You may be spending more money than you need to be. In the same vein as downsizing your housing, you can also downsize your spending. Playing it smart and cooking from scratch, making your own beauty products, or learning to live with less can all make your financial situation easier to fix. Sell If youâve got something valuable at home, something youâre just sitting on, you could actually be making use of it to get out of debt. Old family heirlooms or jewelry from Tiffany Co. could be sold to end some of your debt. You can sell diamonds, watches, gold, and other valuable items. If youâve got luxury goods lying around your house, you can put them to use, brightening your future prospects. PayDay Loans If youâve got a limited income or poor financial credit, it can feel almost impossible to get ahead. Loans might be a form of debt, but theyâre also a way to get out of your current struggles. Payday loans might be the best way to alleviate some of that financial tension, and in America and Canada, New York or Ontario, you can look online to find solutions. Online payday loans in Canada and the US are only a few clicks away. Just be sure to use them judiciously with a clear plan to get out of debt. No debt-free solution is going to feel good. If youâre looking for a magic solution, youâll find it shelved somewhere near Santa Claus. We all wish life could be easybut sometimes, we have to courageous instead. Instead of waiting for magic to come save you, take your life into your own hands. Make some hard decisions and start experiencing the peace and fulfillment of no longer worrying about your financial situation.

Resume Writing For Career Development
Resume Writing For Career DevelopmentHow do you know if resume writing for career development is right for you? In fact, in this day and age many people feel that they have the skills to land a great job, but they are unsure about what their resume should say. And even more commonly, they don't know how to put together a resume that will catch their employer's eye. There are a few things you can do to improve your chances of landing a great job.The first thing you need to know is that your career development is just as important as your academic resume. The career development portion is what should include information on your achievements, skills, and experiences in the workplace. If you haven't included this area in your academic experience, you may be overlooking some of the most important factors when you apply for a job. You may also be overlooking some of the important points you should include. Either way, the career development portion of your resume should not be underestimat ed.When writing the career section, it is a good idea to keep your eyes on the target market. What does a job seeker to look for in their resume? A job seeker looks for credentials, skills, work experience, and those that make them stand out. The better the data points, the better chance you have of getting an interview.Try to make a list of all the skills you have. This includes your technical expertise, your professional abilities, your leadership skills, and your writing abilities. Then brainstorm to see what these points mean to the job market you are aiming for. You could incorporate all of these into a category or you could use the following tips to put together a simple resume writing for career development. As much as possible, stay away from your weaknesses. You don't want to put the information you've got wrong when you know that you need to be correct in order to get the job. Any weakness you may have will be written in red on your resume, so if you think there is somethin g you need to work on, mention it. This is very important and a good tactic to use when trying to build your credentials. However, you should still list it if it is listed correctly. For example, if you know your weakness is oral communication, you may wish to include some examples of topics you have been excellent at.Your career development includes those factors that were not listed in the previous section. You can include a brief explanation of your strengths in your field. Or you may wish to include an area you are outstanding at. This will get you noticed because employers are interested in hiring someone who will be a quality addition to their team.Focus on a professional goal achievement. When you write a resume, you should highlight your achievements that lead to a position or a step up in the career. It is important to emphasize that these goals came from your own initiative, but that they were done with a firm direction to do so. It doesn't matter whether it was your own m otivation or someone else's.These are a few things you can do to add your individual touch to your resume. Once you have finished your writing, submit it to the company you are applying for. Don't forget to include your cv and resume cover letter!

The Magic of Thinking Big - Book Review
The Magic of Thinking Big - Book Review https://www.goodreads.com/book/photo/759945.The_Magic_of_Thinking_BigIf you have read other self-help or motivational books, you might have definitely come across the mention of this timeless classic The Magic of Thinking Big by David J Schwartz.David Schwartz popularized positive thinking the concept of self-belief long before the likes of Tony Robbins others were even born. Dr.Schwartz is one of the original proponents of the self-help movement. The book talks about the importance of having the right attitude, and how anyone The author also provides easy-to-comprehend and specific action steps that one can take to make lasting changes in their lives. In this post, I will summarize the key points I have learnt from reading the book. Every year I re-read a handful books âThose who believe they can move mountains, do .Those who believe they canât, cannot. Belief triggers the power to do.âThe thing that prevents lots of people in realizing their dreams is their own thinking. The self-doubts we face and believe eventually become the bane of our existence. Some of these doubts are self-imposed, while others we acquire culturally or because of upbringing.Making a mental switch to believing that you can achieve what you set out to achieve, helps pave the way. Belief is the first step. Often the path and the âhowâ unwinds in-front of us based on the level of belief we have.âBelief is the thermostat that regulates what we accomplish in life. âFew things you can take to develop the power of Belief:Think Success and not Failure.Remind Yourself Regularly that you are better than you think you are.Believe Big. The size of your success is determined by the size of your belief.Excusitis â" The Failure DiseaseâStudy the lives of successful people and youâll discover this : all the excuses made by the mediocre fellow could be but arenât made by the successful personâ.evalThe author talks about people typically employ different types of excuses to justify their failures. The habit of making excuses i.e excusitis is a mind-deadening thought disease. The more successful someone is, the less inclined they are to make excuses. On the other hand, the less successful someone is, you will notice that they make lots of excuses. The author describes in detail the 4 most common forms of Excusitis:Health ExcusitisIntelligence ExcusitisAge ExcusitisLuck ExcusitisHe spends a good amount of time talking about each of the above excusitisâAction cures fear. Indecision, postponement,on the other hand fertilizes fear. Jot that down in your success rule book right now. Action cures fear.âAll of us face one or more forms of fear.In many cases, fear paralyzes to not get started. The book talks about the importance of action. The more time we spend in the inaction phase, the more fearful we become, and the less action we take. And our confidence goes down. The best antidote to fear is action.Confidence is not an inert quality. Many times it is situatio nal â" we are confident in one area of our lives, while we are afraid in other areas. The book confirms that the only cure for this is to take regular action. Like a muscle, confidence can be built. The more you take steps to improve confidence, the more it grows. Here are some specific action steps to start building confidence in your life.Be a Front SeaterPractice making eye contactWalk 25 percent fasterPractice Speaking upSmile BigThink BigâWhere success is concerned, people are not measured in inches or pounds or college degrees, or family background; they are measured by the size of their thinking. How big we think determines the size of our accomplishments.âAs the title suggests, the quality of our career our lives is in direct proportion to the size of our thinking. Our results are directly proportional to the type of thinking.Stray away from Negative small-minded images. Instead, reframe to thinking big-minded positive images.evalThe more we practice this habit â" the mo re we can change the outlook of our lives.Four ways to develop the Big Thinkerâs Vocabulary:Use big positive, cheerful words and phrases to describe how you feel.Use bright, cheerful, favourable words and phrases to describe other people.Use positive language to encourage others.Use positive words to outline plans to others.âLook at things not as they are, but as they can be. Visualization adds value to everything. A big thinker always visualizes what can be done in the future. He isnât stuck in the present.âevalChange the Way you think about YourselfâThe fellow who thinks he is inferior, regardless of what his real qualifications may be, is inferior. For thinking regulates actions. If a man feels inferior, he acts that way, and no veneer of cover-up or bluff will hide this basic feeling for long. The person who feels he isnât important, isnâtâThere is a direct relationship between how you think to how you act.evalAnd how you act directly affects how others perceive you .The unfortunate reality of life is that people judge us based on our performance, and appearance. Taking the necessary action to change our image definitely impacts otherâs perceptions of us.Another aspect is how you perceive your job. If you think your job is not valuable and your contributions are not important â" then people will perceive the same. It is important to start thinking differently about your job. Start believing and acting as if your job is really important. And this will have a stronger impact on your career.âYou are what you think you are. Think more of yourself and there is more of you.âThe Importance of the Right EnvironmentâThe person with a constructive off-the-job life nearly always is more successful than the person who lives in a dull, dreary home situation.âThe same way we watch our diet to improve our physical health â" we must watch our mind to ensure a successful/happy life. First and foremost, it is important to change your attitude that su ccess is attainable. It starts with the right belief. Then it is important to find the most favourable environment â" associates, friends, workplace that will aid us in our quest for success. Here are some ideas from the book on how to make your environment, make you successful:Be environment-conscious.Make your environment work for you, not against you.Donât let small-thinking people hold you back.Get your advice from successful people.Get plenty of psychological sunshine. Circulate in new groups.Throw thought poison out of your environment.Go first class in everything you do.The book is filled with tons of other golden nuggets to help you chart a successful career and life. The impressive thing about the concepts in the book is that they are laid out in a way that anyone can implement them.Add this book to your yearly reading list.Donât just read it once, but read it few times a year!!

5 More Career Opportunities for Those Who Love Babies - CareerAlley
5 More Career Opportunities for Those Who Love Babies - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. This is the second article in our Working with Babies series (not to be confused with bringing your babies to work!) which is one of our most popular topics (see our first article Career Opportunities for Those Who Love Babies). These careers pay well and are inspiring. You would be surprised how much you can learn from babies (seriously). More than that, these careers are rewarding and challenging. Nannies Weve all heard of Nannies (and some of us had them growing up). An interesting, challenging and rewarding career. What They Do Quite a bit, depending on who you work for. Responsibilities typically include taking care of one or more babies/children in their home. Feeding (maybe cooking), bathing, taking to and from school/nursery programs and trips to the doctor. Some Nannies also do some housekeeping. Much also depends on if you are a live-in or arrive in the morning and leave in the evening. Career opportunities for those who love babies - You would be surprised how much you can learn from babies (seriously). Tweet This Training, Requirements and Education Needed Definitely CPR, good with kids (really?), good under pressure, attention to detail and lots of patience. Training could include Nanny training courses (see below) and Nanny schools and, where possible, previous experience. How Much They Make Much depends on the number of children, where you are located, previous experience/age and the range of duties. However, according to care.com, full-time Nannies can expect to make $325 $800 per week (depending on the specifics listed above) as a live-in and $8 $20 per hour if you do not live in. Other Resources and Things to Consider Hours, duties and pay will play a huge factor in your happiness factor. Resources Take a look at www.nanny.org, lots of resources and information here. Also, take a look at www.americannannyandparentinginstitute.com. Book Corner Beyond Parenting Basics: The International Nanny Associations Official Guide to In-Home Child Care. Photo by pan xiaozhen on Unsplash Daycare Workers A quick definition of a daycare according to Wikipedia.org daycare is the care of a child during the day by a person other than the childs legal guardians, typically performed by someone outside the childs immediate family. What They Do The main differences between daycare workers and Nannies is that daycare workers typically watch several children (from different families) at a location that is not in the home of the children. Additionally, daycare workers are not doing housekeeping, cooking, etc. Much of the day is spent on activities to keep the children occupied and to provide a learning experience as well. When you have an opportunity to work in a field that pays you well while you get to do what you love, you should not pass up the opportunity. Here are five careers involving babies that you can pursue. Each of them gives you a chance to do more than just accompany these new beginners in life. They let you have a profound impact in the quality of a persons life when they are just starting out in the world. Career Opportunities for Those Who Love Babies Training, Requirements and Education Needed Similar to Nannies, CPR and general first aid knowledge are critical. Many states provide training programs and some require some type of certification. There is a broad range of skills and training required depending on the location and organization. Your state and city will likely have a list of resources and training requirements. How Much They Make According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, childcare workers typically make (on average) $9-10 per hour and $20,000 per year. Other Resources and Things to Consider Hours, pay and location are key things to think about when considering this career. Resources myfuture.com has some information regarding training. Also, take a look at child care organizations (such as http://www.nafcc.org). Book Corner Careers in Childcare Photo by rawpixel on Unsplash Infant Teachers No, these are not infants who teach. Seriously though, this is the next step above childcare and nannies, generally requiring specific education and certification. What They Do They help develop (and then teach) education programs for infants and young children up to 3 years or so). They are typically part of a teaching team which can also include Teacher Assistants and aides. Training, Requirements and Education Needed These positions typically require a Bachelors Degree in early childhood education or a related field. Experience helps as well, depending on the position. Some type of certification is generally required and this is governed by the city, state or county where the job resides. How Much They Make According to glassdoor.com, salariesgenerally range from $24,000 to $31,000 depending on experience and education. Other Resources and Things to Consider Where the jobs are Lots of jobs are available. Take a look at Monster Jobs. Resources National organizations have the best resources, take a look at www.naeyc.org/dap/infants-and-toddlers. Book Corner Early Childhood Education. Baby Photographers Another challenging and rewarding career. Everyone wants professional pictures of their babies. What They Do Seems fairly obvious (but it is not). A baby photographer specializes in taking pictures of babies and newborn infants. This is typically done in a studio but can also be done in homes and other locations/events. Lots of props are needed, as is the ability to get the best baby expressions (not an easy task, but can be fun). Training, Requirements and Education Needed To start, you obviously need to be a good photographer. A portfolio always helps, especially if it includes babies and toddlers. Good equipment is a must have as well. Getting hands-on experience (even if it includes babies plus other types of subjects). How Much They Make A lot depends on whether you have your own studio, work for someone else or are a freelancer. If you work in a chain photography business, you will likely make somewhere between $9-$12 per hour. If you have your own business, $4,000 per month is about average. If you get lots of projects, you could potentially make much more. Newborn Specialists A newborn specialist is more typically called a baby nurse. What They Do A Newborn Specialist provides assistance to parents after they bring the baby home from the hospital. This includes feeding, bathing, diaper changes, and help with breast feeding and more. They also help with sleep training and development. Training, Requirements and Education Needed The more training the better. There are certification programs that you can take (like NCSA or ICT). How Much They Make Hourly rates range from $18 to $25 depending on how many babies you care for. According to Indeed.com, annual salaries can be as high as $40,000 per year.
